The Trad Academy welcomes you to our annual folk music summer camp for kids aged 8 to 13. After an overwhelmingly wonderful first session last August we are excited to announce this year’s dates: AUGUST 20th-25th 2017. Activities and workshops start in the evening on Sunday 20th of August and run until Friday 25th where the week will end with a small performance and a big celebration!

Last year, we were thrilled to have such a successful week of music learning, friendship, and fun. We strive to offer young people the opportunity to learn music from a variety of folk traditions, with the aim to create and share song and dance with new friends and in a beautiful setting. The course will be led by Chance KellnerEd Hicks, and Pete Tuin with support from some lovely volunteers.

We are delighted to be back at The Chellington Centre this summer. The centre will again be our home for the week. It is especially set up for young people and provides everything we need to make the week a success. It is in gorgeous Bedfordshire surrounded by fields, forest, lakes, and wildlife. We will spend as much time outside as possible. We have campfires and BBQs, outdoor games including the ever-popular ‘ceilidh-rounders’, walks, and outdoor music playing. The Chellington Centre is a beautiful old church that has been recently converted to accommodate bunk beds and bathrooms/showers, a kitchen, and learning spaces. All the children will be sleeping indoors. Please visit their website for more information: http://www.chellington.org

dscf7829DSCF8040DSCF8490DSCF8441DSCF8096DSCF7860IMG_0001During the week there’ll be a choice of workshops and activities. We’ll be running sessions on fiddle playing, singing folk songs, country dancing, step dancing, and banjo playing. We will als lead band rehearsals with mixed instruments coming together to create their own arrangements and pieces. Our friends at Hobgoblin Music have generously provided 5-string banjos for anyone to try out or borrow for the week. We also provide other instruments such as the melodica (for all those piano players out there), whistles, and other surprises. Children are encouraged to bring their own instrument for the week but it is not mandatory. Hobgoblin Music sell many different folk instruments around the UK and we’re really excited to have their support at Trad Camp.

To apply for a place on the course please contact us.

Look forward to seeing you all there!
