The new year is upon us and the Trad Academy is now getting ready for it’s third term of classes.

Starting in two weeks we’ll be running Two Folk Tunes courses in parallel; One on Tuesdays at the Harrison in Kings Cross and one on Thursdays at Chats Palace, Hackney.

We’re also planning a second term of flat-footing classes with the wonderful Jo Bowis (in February) as well as one off Sunday afternoon specialist workshops on Swedish music, Old Time Fiddle, Shanty Singing and Accompanying Folk Tunes on polyphonic (chordal) instruments.

Folk Tunes Courses

At the Harrison Pub, Kings Cross, every Tuesday from 15th January to 19th February.

Also running at Chats Palace, Hackney, every Thursday from 17th January to 21st February

This class will follow on from earlier courses but will feature a whole new set of tunes and hold some treats for both new players and people who’ve done the tunes course before.

Each of the six classes will focus on a different element of playing dance music such as rhythm, phrasing, style, ornamentation, playing for dances and playing in sessions, and we will learn a different traditional tune each week.

The classes are aimed at those who already play their instruments, and are open to players of any instrument capable of playing tunes in the keys of G and D. Teaching will be by ear, so no music reading is necessary.

The course will run for six weeks at both the Harrison Pub and Chat’s Palace. Anyone signing up to the course will be able to attend either class each week. They can even come to both if they’re really keen.

Kings Cross Classes will run on Tuesday evenings from 6.30pm till 7.30pm at the Harrison, 28 Harrison Street WC1H 8JF from 15th January to 19th February.Hackney Classes will run on Thursday evenings from 7pm-8pm at Chats Palace, 42-44 Brooksby Walk, E9 6DF from 17th January to 21st February.

The course costs £50 for six sessions (£45 concessions) or £10 per session. Please email us to reserve your place.
